Dublin-based Setanta Space Systems is seeking to raise €3m to build out Danu, its AI-powered onboard satellite computing platform. The engineering start-up's technology addresses a growing bottleneck in spacecraft design, as satellites generate far more data than legacy avionics architectures can process or transmit efficiently.
Setanta was founded in 2025 by a team of engineers with backgrounds in European Space Agency missions, and is headquartered at University College Dublin's NovaUCD start-up hub. Co-founder and CEO Adam Taylor previously spent several years working with Airbus designing space-based modular telecommunications processors.
Setanta's core platform, Danu, is an onboard computer built around what the company calls its Space Tile architecture, allowing mission designers to tailor processing power, AI acceleration and radiation tolerance to specific mission needs. The modular design allows computing subsystems to be integrated, upgraded or reconfigured without redesigning a full-scale spacecraft avionics stack.
Taylor said: "Our goal is to give mission designers the flexibility to scale compute on demand, process Earth observation data directly at the payload and give satellites the operational autonomy needed to respond immediately in increasingly complex orbital environments."
Setanta is also developing integrated AI models for spacecraft health monitoring, Earth observation analytics and autonomous navigation. James Murphy, the company's co-founder and chief technology officer, previously spent seven years at Réaltra Space Systems Engineering, where he led its AI engineering division.
Setanta has also been accepted into ESA BIC Ireland, a two-year business incubation programme supporting Irish start-ups developing space-related engineering. The structural driver is the widening gap between satellite data generation and the onboard processing capacity of legacy avionics architectures, as an estimated 100,000 satellites are projected to be in orbit by 2030.
Murphy said: "Being accepted into the ESA BIC initiative gives us the opportunity to network with the wider European space supply chain and advance our technologies further and faster." He added that the support would help the engineering team "engage with satellite integrators and research partners" as it develops its onboard computing platform.
For the sector, Setanta's technology reflects growing engineering demand for onboard autonomy as satellite constellations scale and orbital environments grow more complex. The €3m raise would support further development of Danu's modular hardware and AI software platform.
