Artificial intelligence is reshaping how engineering companies hire, develop talent, and deliver value. The PwC AI Jobs Barometer 2026, published in June and based on analysis of more than one billion job advertisements across 27 territories including Ireland, provides the most detailed account yet of how that reshaping is unfolding. For engineering industry leaders, the report’s findings on productivity divergence, skills transformation, and salary premiums translate into workforce strategy decisions that cannot be deferred.

The headline finding for Ireland is commercially significant. AI hiring in Ireland almost doubled between 2024 and 2025, with job postings requiring AI skills reaching 3.7 per cent in 2025, up from 2.3 per cent in 2024. Jobs requiring specific AI skills are growing 83 per cent faster than the total Irish jobs market since 2019. The engineering industry, operating across infrastructure, manufacturing, engineering design, and project delivery, sits at the centre of these shifts. Engineering technology is evolving in ways that make AI capability a standard expectation in roles spanning civil engineering Ireland, electrical engineering, and structural engineering alike.

The productivity data deserves attention. Companies most exposed to AI recorded 34 per cent productivity growth in 2025 relative to 2018, compared with 24 per cent for those least able to use AI. The top 20 per cent of AI-exposed companies achieved average labour productivity growth of 163 per cent since 2018. Headcount growth at the most AI-exposed companies outpaced growth at the least exposed, at 52 per cent versus 36 per cent. For engineering companies, AI integration and workforce expansion are complementary outcomes, not competing ones.

The barometer identifies a two-track effect on job roles relevant to sustainable engineering and infrastructure engineering. Professionalised roles, in which AI amplifies human expertise, are growing twice as fast as democratised roles, in which AI makes tasks easier for non-experts. For engineering projects in renewable energy, sustainable engineering, and sustainability in engineering practice, the premium is increasingly on professionals who combine domain knowledge with AI fluency. Entry-level roles most exposed to AI are now seven times more likely to require traditionally senior skills such as judgement and leadership, reshaping how the engineering industry must develop its people.

Three priorities emerge for engineering leaders. Workforce planning should be restructured around AI exposure mapping, identifying which roles across project delivery, engineering design, and operations face the fastest skills transformation and building pathways accordingly. Salary strategy should reflect the barometer’s finding that AI-skilled roles carry a 62 per cent global salary premium, adjusting compensation benchmarks to remain competitive for the talent engineering companies need to attract. Investment in engineering innovation through AI tooling should be evaluated on productivity and headcount outcomes, not cost reduction alone. Leading firms are demonstrably growing both.

Ireland’s engineering sector is well positioned to capitalise on the productive potential AI offers. Firms that treat AI as both a workforce development lever and a technology investment will be best placed to capture the productivity gains the barometer identifies as achievable for engineering companies that act with clarity and purpose.
