Subsea Micropiles is investing more than £5 million to establish a new engineering manufacturing facility at the Port of Montrose in Scotland. The facility will engineer and manufacture mooring components for floating offshore wind turbines, creating around 80 engineering and manufacturing jobs.

Subsea Micropiles, a full-service foundations engineering company with offices in Ireland and Aberdeenshire, already has an engineering operations base at the Port of Montrose. The new facility is expected to engineer and manufacture parts for wind turbines in Scottish waters and for international markets.

Subsea Micropiles is headquartered in Westhill, Aberdeenshire, and provides full-service foundation engineering solutions to the offshore wind sector. The company's existing Montrose operations base already supports installation engineering work for offshore wind projects in the region.

The engineered components will function as mooring systems, designed to secure floating offshore wind turbines against sustained loading in deep waters. Subsea Micropiles said its engineered products can be manufactured locally, with the potential to retain significant economic benefit in Scotland through engineering, vessel services and offshore supply chain work.

Derek Robertson, chief executive of Subsea Micropiles, said: "Scotland has become an important base for our growth." Robertson added: "We rely on the deep pool of talent, skills and offshore experience here to develop our technology, services and expand into a global market."

The structural driver is the engineering challenge of anchoring floating offshore wind turbines in the deep waters typical of Scottish and international wind farm sites, requiring specialist mooring and foundation engineering manufactured close to major offshore wind hubs. The Port of Montrose already supports engineering operations for the Seagreen and Inch Cape offshore wind farms, positioning it as an established base for offshore wind supply chain engineering on Scotland's east coast.

The announcement came alongside a separate move by SSE, which named Port of Montrose its preferred location for an operations and engineering base for the Berwick Bank B offshore wind farm, expected to create around 100 further jobs. Berwick Bank B is engineered to include up to 307 turbines, with a capacity to power up to six million homes.

For the sector, Subsea Micropiles' new facility adds specialist engineering manufacturing capacity to the Port of Montrose, reinforcing its role as a base for offshore wind foundation and mooring engineering serving both Scottish and international markets.
