Dublin Offshore, an Irish engineering company, has received a prototype certificate from DNV for its load reduction device designed to mitigate dynamic mooring and platform loads on floating wind turbines, according to Offshore Wind.

The certificate was issued following completion of the prototype certification process in line with DNV-SE-0422 certification of floating wind turbines and technical requirements of DNV-ST-0119. The review covered design basis, structural integrity, load-reduction performance and safety-critical functions, alongside verification of analyses and testing activities defined for the prototype stage.

The device introduces a non-linear response into mooring systems through a combination of weight, ballast and buoyancy, aiming to reduce mooring loads under defined conditions. This represents an important consideration for floating wind, where mooring systems significantly influence levelised cost of energy.

Tom Doyle, technical director at Dublin Offshore, said completion of prototype certification represents an important milestone for the load reduction device. DNV's independent verification across feasibility, compliance and prototype certification provides assurance of the technology's technical robustness and supports engagement with developers, designers and project stakeholders.

The company received a DNV Statement of Feasibility and Statements of Compliance in 2025, covering the device's design basis, detailed design, manufacturing and performance. Dublin Offshore previously obtained verification from the European Marine Energy Centre in 2021, confirming compliance with International Electrotechnical Commission technical specification IEC TS 62600-10.

The device has been developed to reduce loads, lower costs and mitigate failure risk in permanent mooring systems, including those used in floating offshore wind. Following certification issuance, Dublin Offshore will continue working toward commercial deployment, including project-specific qualification activities and integration into permanent mooring system designs.
